Atkins Diet Menu

In 1992 Dr. Robert Atkins published his bestselling book, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. The premise of the Atkins' Diet is that Americans tend to gain weight because their diet and lifestyle are at odds. Many people consume foods high in sugar and carbohydrates but fail to engage in enough activity to burn the excess energy these ingredients provide. Our fat stores swell as we overload on superfluous energy. The Atkins program limits the intake of carbs and sugars, encouraging our bodies to burn off its excess fat.

The Atkins diet menu therefore incorporates the following strong suggestions. These foods and meals in should be incorporated in due moderation. However, any food high in carbohydrates, starch, or sugars (breads, pastas, potatoes) should only be included in very small amounts—if at all.

Breakfast foods include: Eggs, Omellettes, smoothies, muffins, protein bars, quiche and bacon.

Lunch foods include: Salads, varied greens like arugula, watercress, endives, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, squash and sun dried tomatoes.

Dinners: Soups with beef, chicken or vegetable broth, mushrooms, low carb tomato sauce, rice, packaged tuna, salmon, sardines, chicken and ham.

Suggested snacks: Macadamia nuts, almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts and pecans. These should only be consumed in small amounts.
