Valerian

Valerian is a European plant. For medicinal purposes the roots and underground stems are used. During summer, valerian blooms with white and pink flowers.

Why do people use valerian?

Valerian induces relaxation and sleep. Herbalists use it to treat insomnia, anxiety and restlessness.

German medicine uses it to treat muscle spasms, insomnia, and restlessness. Studies show it effectively relaxes the nervous system.

Are there any side effects?

Unfortunately valerian also has the potential to damage the liver. Continued use may aggravate the liver. Other relaxants are available without this side effect.

Besides liver damage valerian should not be taken by pregnant or breast feeding women. There is also danger of allergy. Anyone allergic to valerian faces serious injury should they ingest the herb.

If you are taking valerian do not drink alcohol or try to operate a car while under its influence. Its relaxing effect can lead to complications.

How is valerian available?

Valerian is available as a tea, in a tablet, and as a tincture.

Use one teaspoon of the herb to make a tea. Mix with a cup of boiling water and drink as needed. Do not exceed three cups a day.

Valerian tablets vary from 400 to 900 milligrams. Take one an hour before bedtime.

An occasional herb

Using valerian may cause liver damage, but occasional use can naturally help you sleep. Avoid using it for chronic conditions to avoid its major side effects.
