It helps regulate the reproductive cycle and nourishes women weakened by heavy periods. The blood nourishing effect makes dong quai an effective treatment for anemia. It warms the blood, encouraging circulation. This flushes the intestines and cures constipation. Are there any major side effects? Since dong quai helps blood flow it should NOT be used to treat heavy menstrual flow. Its blood thinning qualities can increase the flow and jeopardize the woman’s health. Dong quai should not be used excess or by pregnant women. Signs that dong quai is causing harm include diarrhea, bruising and bleeding. Dong quai oil can cause cancer. Direct ingestion of the oil should be avoided. When purchasing dong quai extract, check and make sure that the oil was not included. Avoid using blood thinners while taking dong quai. How should I take Dong Quai? The most prevalent forms of dong quai are tablets containing liquid extract or the raw root itself. Tablets usually come in doses of 0.5 grams. To prepare the root, soak 5 – 30 grams of it in boiling water or wine. Use more depending on the desired potency. |
